Bowl History:
The Fiesta Bowl debuted in 1971 with a matchup between Arizona State and Florida State, with ASU prevailing 45-38. Originally the bowl had an automatic bowl tie-in for the Western Athletic Conference champion. However, in 1978 Arizona and Arizona State joined the Pac 10 conference and the tie-in was ended. After hosting several high profile games, the bowl was moved to New Year's Day in 1981. In 1992, the Fiesta Bowl was invited to join the Bowl Coalition, which would eventually become the Bowl Championship Series.
