Bowl History:
The Rose Bowl is the oldest and historically
the most prestigious college football bowl game. The
game is nicknamed "The Granddaddy of Them All"
and is part of the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena,
California. The University of Michigan won the first
Rose Bowl Game (originally titled the "Tournament
East-West Football Game") in 1902 over Stanford
University 49-0. Football took a 15 year hiatus from
the Tournament until 1916, the game has been played
annually since then.
The first 8 Rose Bowls were held at a private park
maintained by the California Institute of Technology
named Tournament Park. The game quickly outgrew this
venue and was moved to the City of Pasadena's newly
completed Rose Bowl Stadium in 1923. Other than a
temporary relocation in 1942, the Rose Bowl Stadium
has hosted the game every year since then. The 1942
game was moved to Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus
of Duke University due to fears of a Japanese attack
against the West Coast early in World War II.
